COMPOST TOPDRESSING
Sustainable Stewards offers a high-quality 100% compost top dressing for lawns & turf that is derived from yard waste and wastewater biosolids directly from the Quad Cities that contains no sand or filler material! A high-quality compost top dressing is an excellent way to amend soils (Soil Restoration) that lack nutrients and organic matter. Compost top dressing is typically done in the spring or fall in which a thin layer of compost is spread over the entire lawn or turf. Contact your local Steward to inquire about a total lawn and turf renovation which includes prep work for top dressing, compost top dressing, and overseeding.
Prep Work Before Topdressing
To get the most out of your compost top dressing for your lawn there are some preparation considerations which are highly recommended.
-
Address Weeds: Adding compost to a lawn full of weeds may compound the problem by providing nutrients for weeds to thrive.
-
Dethatch: A thick thatch layer may inhibit compost top dressing to reach soil and root levels.
-
Aeration: Core aeration loosens existing compacted soils which helps compost top dressings reach soil and root levels.
-
Consider Overseeding: Compost top dressing is also recommended when overseeding. This will ensure soil to seed contact for high germination rates, act as a cover seed to limit wind stress, increase moisture retention for seedlings, provide nutrients to seeds and new grass, and prevent birds from consuming your new seed.
